As a police officer in the province of Ontario, you will be called upon to serve your community to the best of your ability within the laws governing your authority.  The duties of a police officer include:

  • Preserving the peace

  • Preventing crime and other offenses and providing assistance in prevention

  • Assisting victims of crime

  • Apprehending criminals and others who may lawfully be taken into custody

  • Laying charges and participating in prosecutions

  • Executing warrants

  • Investigating and reporting occurrences

  • Performing the lawful duties that the Chief of Police or Commissioner assigns

  • Enforcing municipal by-laws

  • Completing the prescribed training

Basic Qualifications & Requirements

Please read the requirements below carefully.  If you do not have ALL of the requirements and qualifications listed, you will not be accepted.

A.     Ontario's Police Service Act outlines a number of basic requirements for the position of police constable

  • A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada

  • At least eighteen years of age

  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position, having regard to his or her own safety and the safety of the public

  • Of good moral character and habits

  • Has successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or its equivalent
     

B.     Further requirements for police applicants are:

  • Possess a valid driver's license with no more than six accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges

  • Possess a valid Standard First Aid Certificate and a valid C.P.R. Certificate (Basic Rescuer Level) at the time of hire

  • Vision within acceptable standards:  Uncorrected Visual Acuity should be at least 20/40 (6/12) binocularly (both eyes open).   Corrected Visual Acuity should be at least 20/20 (6/6) binocularly.  There are minimum requirements regarding refractive surgery, farsightedness (hyperopia), colour vision, depth perception peripheral vision, and night vision. With regards to laser surgery and Intra-Ocular lenses, these processes are acceptable, but applicants must meet specific standards as outlined by the Constable Selection System

  • Hearing within acceptable standards:  Normal hearing at frequencies of 500 to 4000 Hz measured by audiometer

  • No criminal conviction(s) for which a pardon has not been granted

  • Pass medical examination
     

C.     Successfully complete pre-interview screening in the following areas:

        STAGE I:

  • Police Analytical Thinking Inventory (PATI)

  • Written Communication Test (WCT)

  • Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP)

        STAGE II:

  • Behavioral Personnel Assessment Device for Police (B-PAD)

  • Vision and Hearing Assessment
