YRT/VIVA Special Constable - Qualifications

When applying for the position of Special Constable with York Region Transit (YRT/Viva) Enforcement and Security, candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered in the selection process:

  • Successful completion of a two (2) year Community College program in Police Foundations or Law and Security or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of security or law enforcement experience.  Related experience in dealing with the public and enforcement procedures may be considered as alternate relevant experience.
  • Acceptable fitness requirements, as defined by the Constable Selection System, including a minimum level of vision, hearing, motor skills, upper body strength, and cardio-vascular endurance.
  • Valid Applicant Testing Services (ATS) Special Constable Test Results Profile (including vision and hearing screening) or a valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate of Results. (For further information visit Self-Assessment, Medical requirements for candidates".
  • Valid Ontario G class driver’s licence in good standing
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, at minimum
  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position
  • Have no criminal record for which you have not received a pardon and be of good moral character and habits
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and at least 18 years old

In addition, the YRT/Viva Transit Enforcement Unit requires that each candidate must:

  • Be a fully licensed driver and meet the requirements of the Graduated Licensing System in the Province of Ontario having accumulated no more than four demerit points.

  • Not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a record suspension (formerly a pardon has not been granted.  If you have been convicted criminally under a federal statute (other than the Youth Criminal Justice Act), you must obtain a record suspension prior to submitting an application.
  • Candidates must successfully complete the YRT/Viva Special Constable pre-interview tests administered by Applicant Testing Services Inc. (ATS) to initiate the application process.  An ATS Special Constable TRP will normally be e-mailed to you within 3-5 business days after your test date.

A valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (O.A.C.P.) Certificate of Results for the Constable Selection System will also be accepted. Should you choose to complete the O.A.C.P. testing for the Constable Selection System, the results of Stage I (PATI, WCT, PREP) will be e-mailed to you within 3 - 5 business days of testing. If successful in all three tests, you will be invited back for Stage II (B-PAD, vision & hearing assessment) approximately three weeks later. After successfully completing Stage II, you will be mailed an O.A.C.P. Certificate of Results within 10-14 business days of your Stage II date.
